The Ferrari 488 Spider, unveiled in 2015, is a convertible version of the 488 GTB. Like its predecessor, the 458 Spider, it features a retractable hardtop. Under the hood is the same 3.9-liter twin-turbo V8 engine as on the 488 GTB, generating 670 hp and 760 Nm of torque. This engine enables the Spider to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.0 seconds, with a top speed of 325 km/h.
The engine is mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, derived from that used on the 458. Braking improvements, with carbon ceramic discs, reduce stopping distances by 9% compared to the 458. The aerodynamic design has been optimized, increasing downforce by 50% compared to its predecessor while reducing drag.
The weight of the 488 Spider is only 50 kg higher than that of the coupe, thanks to the extensive use of aluminum and lightweight materials. The 488 Spider has been hailed for its combination of performance and design, and was named one of the top ten technology cars of 2016 by IEEE Spectrum.
