Delivered new in New York in 1958, this Bentley Serie 1 has been the delight of its current French owner since 2007. Carefully maintained and stored in good conditions, it has a follow-up of invoices from 2008 to 2023 and is in remarkable condition for its age.
Last maintenance: transistorized ignition, revised carburetion, replacement of spark plugs and steering cylinder, rear tires, brakes.
Aesthetics
Although the bodywork shows some wear and tear, the paintwork is very homogeneous and deep. Its chrome shines brightly, its doors are well aligned and its joints have kept a good flexibility and waterproofness. The observation of the undercarriage is the apparent proof of perfect storage conditions and regular maintenance. Except for some minor seepage under the engine, the running gear is in good shape and the chassis, blacked out, shows no trace of rust or corrosion.
Interior
The Connolly leather upholstery in a beautifully vintage luxury case could use a little refreshing. The roof lining and the burr walnut woodwork are in good condition and have a nice patina. Only the sunroof and air conditioning are no longer functional.
Mechanics
Opening the engine cover reveals a very clean package. The 4.9-liter inline-six is unsophisticated, and exudes health. This robust engine delivers a pleasant musical score and linear power, well supported by a 4-speed automatic transmission.
With its high degree of comfort and its reliable and smooth engine, the Bentley S1 remains one of the most prestigious cars of its time. Ahead of its time and very exclusive, it is today a safe bet and remains a mythical model highly sought after by collectors.
