Singularity of the car

  • Low mileage
  • Fully restored vehicle
  • Origin France

In 1969, Citroën presented its new model, the Citroën ID20, in a bid to win over a new clientele with less appetite for novelty. Based on the DS20 chassis, the ID model retained the same features and proportions, but was simpler and less expensive. It shares its suspension system with the DS, but stands out for its conventional clutch gearbox, unassisted steering and braking. The ID20F is the successor to the generation 19, with an F version for the family. The external headlamps are replaced by a new front end, including optional directional streamlined headlamps, and power is increased to 91 hp.

Put on the road in 1973, our French-origin Citroën ID20F with only 41,000km on the clock is in excellent condition, thanks in particular to a complete mechanical and body restoration carried out in 2022, with invoice. Our example is free from corrosion, with only the original headliner showing a few very light stains. Our model, in its family version, has six seats (whose upholstery has been completely renovated), a roof rack and a spare wheel. The ID20F is powered by a 2.0L 91 hp engine, coupled to a four-speed manual gearbox, and comes in a "Beige Albatros (AC087)" exterior color, which blends perfectly with the tobacco-colored targa leather interior. Service history (last serviced 04/05/2022) is supported by available invoices and a clear history.

Historical summary of the model

The Citroën ID, produced between 1955 and 1975, was designed to meet the demands of customers who wanted the design and comfort of a DS for less. To achieve this, the brand stripped its ID version of a few features, such as a semi-automatic gearbox and hydraulic power steering and braking systems. The gamble paid off, as 835,666 units of the Citroën ID were produced, across all generations, at an introductory price 15% lower than that of a DS. The first ID19 versions were equipped with a "D series" engine derived from the "11D" front-wheel drive, and retained the hydraulic suspension of the DS. On the outside, they were easy to tell apart: no chrome wheel covers or headlamp surrounds (until 1959), rubber windscreen surrounds, burgundy-red rear indicators, translucent fiberglass roof (painted white from 1962) and, crucially, silver chevrons (gold on the DS) on the rear trunk. Both the Citroën ID and the DS were available as sedans, station wagons, ambulances and convertibles throughout their careers. However, as the years went by, the Citroën ID became increasingly gentrified, to the point where the cabriolet model was almost identical in appearance to the DS version (apart from the dashboard and the ashtray above the front fenders). In the '70s, the commercial name "ID" was replaced by DSuper, power steering was added as standard, and power output was revised to 106 hp DIN. The Citroën DS and ID disappeared in the summer of 1975 with the launch of the Citroën CX2000, but enjoyed a remarkable career with over two million units sold, third place in the international "Car of the Century" competition, and use as an official presidential car (it saved General de Gaulle's life in 1962 during the Petit-Clamart bombing).

The Citroën ID/DS20 is currently on the rise, and with models in good condition becoming rare, it is once again attracting the attention of collectors. Today, to buy an ID/DS20 is also to offer the luxury of driving an illustrious car from France's automotive heritage, an ideal compromise for a future owner wishing to drive a symbol of classicism and elegance from the 60s.
