Produced from 1967 onwards, the MG C is the replacement for the very popular MG B. Featuring the same bodywork, the MG C's distinctive domed hood accommodated the MG B's much larger in-line 6-cylinder engine. The mechanical elements were then adjusted to match the 145 horsepower delivered, offering more power but more weight.
This MG C Cabriolet was launched in the USA on May 1, 1969. The history of its previous owners during its stay in the United States is not known. However, it is known that this MG C was imported to France in 2013 following purchase by a first French owner, and was subsequently purchased in 2017 by its current owner. It is presented in very good overall condition, thanks in particular to a complete restoration carried out in 2013. Its bodywork, in a blue hue, is in very good condition. The paintwork is bright and deep, with only a few minor blemishes, notably above the left front wheel. There are no noticeable scratches or dents. The blue soft top is free of snags. The US clearance lights were removed during restoration.
Inside, this MG C features blue leather seats in good condition with few signs of use. They are accompanied by a wooden steering wheel and gearshift lever in very good condition, and a black dashboard with no notable defects. The on-board instrumentation functions normally, and there are no charges to be expected in the interior. Mechanically, this model has a 145 hp 6-cylinder engine in good working order. Start-ups are smooth, and there's no noise to be noted while driving. The gearbox operates smoothly, and shifts without a hitch. It has 70,890 miles on the clock.
This MG C Cabriolet has been serviced since its arrival in France by 2 English car specialists, "Avantage Automobiles" and "L'Atelier Automobile". Numerous invoices are available, as well as an expert report dating from 2013 after restoration. The last service was carried out in January 2022. Consumables are in good condition. The only costs to be expected after purchase will be an overhaul.
The MG C Cabriolet, launched in 1967, is an important part of the automotive history of MG (Morris Garages), a British brand renowned for its sports cars. The car was conceived in the context of MG's search for a more modern, high-performance successor to the highly successful MG B.
Under the hood, the MG C was equipped with a 2,912 cm³ in-line six-cylinder engine, considerably larger and more powerful than that of the MG B. This engine produced 145 hp (108 kW) at 5,250 rpm and 217 Nm of torque at 3,500 rpm. With this engine, the MG C could reach a top speed of around 193 km/h (120 mph) and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 10 seconds, respectable figures for the time. To accompany the new engine, the MG C underwent chassis and suspension modifications. The front suspension was fitted with coil springs and an anti-roll bar, a configuration that differed from that of the MG B. However, this modification led to criticism of handling and ride comfort, with a heavier front end and less agile handling than its predecessor.
Aesthetically, the MG C shared many elements with the MG B, notably the bodywork. However, it was distinguished by a domed hood, necessary to accommodate the larger engine. This became a distinctive feature of the MG C. Inside, finish and equipment were similar to those of the MG B, offering a standard level of comfort for the period. Production of the MG C Cabriolet lasted from 1967 to 1969. During this period, around 4,544 units of the cabriolet version were produced, representing a relatively small fraction of total MG vehicle production. The MG C's limited production and short lifespan can be attributed to a variety of factors, including criticism of its driving characteristics and the perception that it was not a significant improvement on the MG B.
The MG C Cabriolet represents an interesting chapter in MG's history, illustrating both the brand's ambition to develop more powerful sports cars and the challenges associated with introducing significant changes to an established model range. Although its production run was short and it received a mixed reception at the time, the MG C is today regarded by classic car enthusiasts as a unique and collectible model.
