The Sunbeam Alpine Spider Touring, based on the Sunbeam Alpine Series III, is a two-seater roadster produced by the Rootes Group. Originally launched in 1953, the Sunbeam Alpine went through several iterations, with the Série III produced between March 1963 and January 1964. The Série III, the rarest of the Alpines, saw the production of just 5863 units.
The Series III was available in two versions: GT with removable hardtop, and ST with soft top. Distinctive features included high fins, a small quarter window for the guide, a vertical spare wheel, tanks in the fins, and chrome bumpers. The GT version featured a 1592cc engine de-carbonized for a smoother ride.
The Spider Touring was not a new creation from Carrozzeria Touring, but a reinterpretation of the English version, which had emerged from a contract with the Rootes group in 1961. The restyling focused mainly on the rear wings, simplified for a more modern look. The English design remained largely intact, with an elegant hardtop option transforming the roadster into a coupé.
Production ceased in mid-1964, when the collapse of the Rootes Group led to the closure of Carrozzeria Touring in 1966. The Sunbeam Alpine Spider Touring remains a unique testimony to Anglo-Italian collaboration in the car industry in the 1960s.
