Our Triumph GT6 MKII was launched in 1969. It has passed through the hands of 4 owners, including its current French owner, since January 16, 2021.
This example presents itself in good overall condition, with the few minor flaws of a car dating from 1969. In a blue hue, combined with silver Minilite wheels, numerous chrome elements, black leather seats and a wooden dashboard, this Triumph GT6 is presented in its original condition.
Mechanically, it is flawless. It benefits from a complete overhaul of the in-line 6-cylinder engine. Combined with a 4-speed manual gearbox, it develops 105 bhp and delivers a veritable symphony from the lowest revs. Maintenance is carried out at Storic Italia Marseille. A full service history is available since 2006. Repairs to the rear axle, a change of wipers and a technical inspection will be carried out before the sale. This model is fitted with a radio and a custom-made cover.
In the 60s, British brands such as Triumph and MG were battling it out in the small sports segment, among others. In the winter of 1962-1963, Harry Webster, Triumph's technical director, asked Italian designer Giovanni Michelloti to create a new prototype, based on the Spitfire launched the previous year. The prototype is a coupé, presented to and welcomed by the Coventry management. It uses the chassis and design of the Triumph Spitfire, but dispenses with the 4-cylinder engine, considered too weak. The engineers opted for the in-line 6-cylinder engine already used on the Triumph Herald. With performance in mind, the engine was upgraded from 1.6L to 2L displacement. After several months' work and several prototypes, the model was finally presented to the public at the 1966 Paris and London Motor Shows. The Triumph GT6 makes its appearance, one year after its MGB GT competitor.
The Triumph GT6 unveils a resplendent fast-back design, both sporty and seductive. The design of the Spitfire is transfigured, and perfectly integrated by Giovanni Michelloti in this new model. The MKII version has a few notable differences, such as the front bumper positioned higher, eliminating the hollow, voluminous grille. The front hood features a boss to house the in-line six and its carburetors, which are larger than the Spitfire's in-line 4. Numerous chrome accents on the door surrounds, windscreen, bumpers and door handles recall the sixties spirit of British sports cars. Access to the interior requires flexibility and precision. There's more room on board than you might think, with leather-covered seats. The wooden dashboard houses numerous gauges, and offers a more luxurious finish than on the Spitfire cousin.
The choice of an in-line 6-cylinder engine gives the GT6 105 hp, reached at 5,300 rpm. Its impressive torque, combined with a rather light body, makes for a sporty, albeit restrained, ride. The Triumph GT6 is closer to an excellent GT than to a sports car. A 4-speed mechanical gearbox unleashes the symphony of the in-line 6, very impressive during operation, even at low revs. The Triumph GT6 was produced until 1974, 8 years after its introduction. Its Fastback design gives it an inimitable charm.
