Our Volvo PV 544 Sport was launched on July 12, 1962. Its history from 1962 to 2010 is not yet known, so its origins remain a mystery. It was recovered by Autoretrosport in 2015 in Belgium to be prepared for its current owner. It was imported into France following preparation.
This example is in excellent overall condition, both mechanically and aesthetically. The complete restoration carried out in 2015 and the addition of numerous mechanical and aesthetic elements ensure perfect operation and good presentation. In a red hue, combined with 5.5'' grey wheels, numerous chromes, two retro-style Cibié lights, a black sports steering wheel, two grey sliding bucket seats and black hoops, this example is one of a kind. The driver's bucket seat has a presentation defect.
Mechanically, this model is in perfect working order. The gearbox and rear axle have been refurbished, an electric fan and a new radiator have been added, 4 Bilstein shock absorbers and silentblocs have been fitted, and much more. The B18 engine, originally rated at 90 hp, has been upgraded with Weber 45 carburetors to develop 130 hp. It is mated to a 4-speed manual gearbox. An expert's report and invoices following the restoration are available. The last service was carried out in November 2023 at Atelier Classic Auto. This car is ready to receive its Historic Technical Passport to take part in regularity rallies.
Here is the equipment added during VHC preparation:
At the Volvo Grand Salon in September 1944, the Swedish brand presented a promising new model, the PV 444. Attractively priced, in line with the previous OV4 of 1927, the PV444 aroused great interest thanks to its excellent construction and innovations. The Volvo PV444 is the first Volvo model to feature a self-supporting body that integrates the chassis. It also features a laminated glass windscreen, a major safety innovation. The design was strongly influenced by American designs, with rounded curves and lots of chrome. The engine was a 4-cylinder ranging from 40 to 85 hp, combined with a 3-speed gearbox. Economist Assar Gabrielsson's forecast, normally quite accurate, was for 8,000 models sold (revised to 12,000). His prediction would prove to be the most inaccurate of his career, as the PV 444 went on to sell over 200,000 units. The enormous success of the PV 444 confirmed the model's effectiveness, prompting Volvo to produce a new version, the PV 544.
The 544's chassis was the same as its predecessor's, but this 5-seater (hence the name) featured a large, one-piece windshield. It also benefits from a padded dashboard, a new secure steering column and a new rear interior. Available in 4 versions: Standard, Special 1, Special 2 and Sport. Produced from 1958 to 1965, the PV 544 is available in numerous vintages, from A to G. The first vintages were equipped with M30 3-speed or M40 4-speed gearboxes. In 1959, the A model was equipped with the 3-stage B16B engine, producing 60 hp in the basic version, but increased to 85 hp with two Stromberg carburetors in the Sport version. Major changes were seen from 1961 with the C model. A new engine, the B18, was adopted, with a 5-bearing crankshaft. This new engine produced no less than 75 hp, and 90 hp in the Sport version. The PV544's electrical system uses 12 volts, and the speedometer is now graduated up to 180 km/h. Aesthetically, a B18 logo appears on the front grille and on the right rear of the boot lid.
Alongside its civilian career, the PV 544 was also a true sports car, especially in rallying. Its "sport" version with two SU carburetors was particularly efficient. The factory entered several PV 544s with the B18 engine increased to 130 and 140 hp, thanks in particular to the adoption of a camshaft with increased valve lift, a higher compression ratio, a 4-in-1 exhaust and the adoption of two Solex or Weber carburetors. It won several races between 1959 and 1965, including the Rallye des 1000 Lacs, the Rallye de Suède and the East African Safari Rally.
