In the 1970s, BMW, following the craze for motor sports, was encouraged to develop its own dedicated division. As the success of the Alpina tuner on its range was also evolving, the brand took the lead in creating its new entity. Former driver Jochen Neerspach took over the reins of the BMW Motorsport GmBh subsidiary on 24 May 1972. The first works of the sports division are special engines, as well as preparation for participation in Formula 2.
The first model developed entirely by BMW Motorsport appeared in 1978, under the name BMW M1. Initially developed for competition, 456 units were produced for road use and inaugurated the know-how of BMW M. The 6-cylinder engine of the M1 was reused in 1984 on production models, notably for a certain M5 e26. It was followed 2 years later by the famous M3 e30, which definitively established BMW M as one of the most fashionable manufacturers. The M models follow one another year after year, until the release of the 2023 M2, a final model before a probable switch to electric.
The BMW M2, unveiled in 2023, is like a final farewell offered by BMW M for its 50 years of existence. One last dance with a big gasoline engine before electrification. Obviously, this M2 G87 has new evolutions, and more power. Its body is 3 cm longer and 6 cm wider than its predecessor. In terms of weight, the M2 skips the speed and gains 150 kilograms. To improve performance despite the weight gain, BMW M offers an additional 90 horsepower, giving the M2 a 3.0L engine with 460 horsepower! The performance is there, well accompanied by an ecological penalty as aggressive as the M2. In terms of design, the M2 G87 has a square body, with flanks, particularly at the rear, reminiscent of those of the M3 e30. The grille, although widened, remains sober next to the bodybuilt rear. The interior retains the German sobriety, offering a quality finish characteristic of the M models.
