A sport version followed in 1958 developing 21 hp as well as a station wagon version, the 500 "gardener" in 1960. Although the 500 struggled to establish itself in the face of competition from the Vespa and other Fiat 600s, it did not miss its entry into the 1960s, which it made its own.
With each successive evolution, the yoghurt pot became more and more gentrified and offered more than acceptable levels of finish for a car of the time. Released in 1968, the Fiat 500 L, for Lusso (Italian for luxury), marked the high point of this gentrification. Available in new colors, it features a coated dashboard, chrome elements, a rectangular meter with a fuel gauge display as well as a sun visor, carpeting on the floor and more comfortable seats.
The success of the Fiat 500 spread beyond the borders of Europe and it became the popular car par excellence. Nearly 4 million units were sold until 1975, and today it has become a true icon and is part of Italy's national heritage.
