Singularity of the car

Historical summary of the model

At the very end of the 1960s, Maserati wanted to renew its range and was working on a replacement for the Sebring and Mexico models. The GT sports car would be named Indy, the work of the coachbuilder Vignale, who had already produced the 3500 GT Spyder and the Sebring, and who was one of the figures who helped the Trident brand avoid bankruptcy.

The Indy takes its name from Maserati's victories in two consecutive editions of the Indianapolis 500 in 1939 and 1940. Honorable victories considering that Maserati is the only Italian manufacturer with Dallara to have won this legendary race.

Initially equipped with the same 4.2-liter V8 of 260 horsepower as the Mexico, as well as a version re-bored to 4.7 liters developing 290 horsepower, the Indy will benefit in 1973 from a new evolution equipped with a V8 increased to 4.9 liters and 320 horsepower. This America version, designed for the North American market, will allow its 4 occupants to reach a speed of 265km/h, a desire assumed by Maserati, with the aim of competing with Ferrari and its 365 GT4 2+2.

On this occasion, the 4.2 liters and 4.7 liters disappear and the Indy receives as a bonus, a new gearbox, 15 inches wheels, air conditioning and a new braking system of Citroen origin.

The proposed model is a Maserati Indy 4.9 liters from 1974. Built at 300 examples, this rare car is delivered in a sublime Argento Indianapolis and has 140,000 kilometers. Carefully maintained, this Indy is in very good condition for a car that is almost half a century old, but would deserve a light restoration to regain its former glory.

The GT 2+2 is certainly not the most famous Maserati, but it offers a timeless design, a combination of comfort, luxury and performance, providing its occupants with an unprecedented feeling.
