Ferrari 12 Cilindri: the V12 never dies

While some predicted the demise of the Ferrari V12 as early as 2012, the prancing-horse brand managed to maintain its hegemony for many more years to come. After the F12 Berlinetta and the 812 Superfast, Ferrari is at it again, unveiling the 12 Cilindri (pronounced "Dodici Cilindri"), with an air of homage to its historic engine. We have to take advantage of this latest potential V12, which offers 830 hp and a red zone perched at no less than 9,500 rpm!

The first impression of this 12 Cilindri's design will not leave enthusiasts unmoved. The large black transverse band linking the two headlamps at the front is a clear reference to the legendary 365 Daytona. Moreover, the overall design seems to be evolving towards a stylistic simplicity similar to that of the Ferraris of the 60s. Gone are the tortured lines and prominent aerodynamic elements; the 12 Cilindri has an ultra-flat hood, streamlined stern, generously curved front wings and headlights and taillights made of simple LED edgings. The result is a more restrained temperament, at least in terms of design. However, it doesn't shy away from active aerodynamics, with two black-painted body panels above the lights that can be raised by 10° to generate 50 kg of downforce.

As far as the interior is concerned, we can quickly forget the designers' desire for stylistic simplicity, which was applied to the body. There's no homage to the past here, apart from the gear selector, which features the famous H-shaped grille. The cockpit bears a strong resemblance to that of the Purosangue, with a host of screens integrated into two caps. The driver is therefore entitled to all-digital instrumentation and infotainment, while the passenger also has a hand in the system. The stylistic contrast between cockpit and body is somewhat surprising, but Ferrari's craftsmanship never disappoints. And for a rare occasion in the history of the Prancing Horse marque, the coupé and spider versions are unveiled simultaneously.

Of course, the highlight of the show is hidden under the front hood. This long nose, comparable to that of the 812 Superfast, houses an 830 hp, naturally-aspirated 6.5 L V12 capable of reaching no less than 9,500 rpm! Compared with the 812 Superfast, the 30 extra horsepower and a breaker pushed back to 1000 rpm compensate for the 12 Cilindri's slight extra weight of 35 kilograms. Performance remains in line with Ferrari standards, with a 0 to 100 km/h time of 2.9 seconds and a top speed in excess of 340 km/h. Nothing surprises us any more with the Scuderia. The price, on the other hand, may dislocate a few jaws of astonishment. The coupé, called the Berlinetta, will be offered at €395,000, and the Spider for the modest sum of €435,000. The Ferrari V12 has to be earned!
