Historical summary of the model

The Chevrolet Corvette C2, nicknamed the "Sting Ray", is an iconic sports car produced by Chevrolet from 1963 to 1967. This second-generation Corvette marked a radical departure in terms of performance and design from its predecessor, the C1.

TheC2 was introduced in 1963, the result of a bold design by Larry Shinoda under the supervision of General Motors design chief Bill Mitchell. Its silhouette, inspired by the 1957 Q-Corvette concept car and the 1959 Stingray Racer, featured a drastically lowered roofline and a sleek profile, in stark contrast to the rounded forms of the first generation. Under the hood, the C2 Corvette debuted with a 327 cubic inch (5.4 L) V8, offering several power levels. In 1965, Chevrolet introduced the 396-cubic-inch (6.5 L) "Big Block" engine, followed in 1966 and 1967 by 427-cubic-inch (7.0 L) versions, boosting performance considerably.

The standard transmission was a three-speed manual, with options for a four-speed manual or a two-speed Powerglide automatic. In terms of chassis, the C2 introduced independent rear suspension, a significant improvement over the C1's rigid rear axle, greatly enhancing handling and driving comfort. The C2 was available in coupe and cabriolet versions. The 1963 coupé was distinguished by its split rear window, a unique design feature that was replaced by a single pane in later models due to visibility and safety concerns.

Over the years, the C2 Corvette saw several improvements, including the introduction of four-wheel disc brakes in 1965, a first for the Corvette, offering a significant improvement in stopping power. The Corvette C2 Cabriolet had a significant impact on Chevrolet's image as a sports car manufacturer. Its bold design and improved performance over the previous generation firmly established it as an American sports car icon. It also had a significant influence on the automotive design of the 1960s, thanks to its distinctive lines and sporty silhouette.

After 1967, the C2 Corvette gave way to the C3, which continued to develop the design language and performance established by the C2. Yet the C2 remains a memorable chapter in Corvette history, often celebrated for its bold styling and technical innovations.
