Our Lotus Esprit Turbo SE was delivered new in the USA and put on the road in 1990. It has 3 owners, including 2 French, the importer and its current owner who has owned it since 2019.
This Lotus Esprit Turbo SE is in excellent overall condition, in keeping with its low mileage of 43,950 KM. In a red hue, combined with a Caramel interior and chrome-plated aluminum wheels, this model is flawless.
In terms of mechanical performance, it's flawless. The 264 hp 2.2 L 4-cylinder engine, combined with the 5-speed manual gearbox, always delivers excellent performance. Maintenance is carried out by vintage specialists. Numerous invoices are available for consultation. The last service was carried out at the end of 2023. New tires, suspension, stainless steel pot, clutch sender and receiver.
Presented at the 1972 Turin Motor Show, the Lotus Esprit was derived from an Italdesign concept car. Straight out of Giorgetto Giugiaro's designs, the Esprit was conceived as an improved derivative of the Lotus Europa and Lotus Eclat of the 1970s. The fiberglass and Kevlar bodywork with retractable headlight is typical of the seventies, and very similar to the Lamborghini Countach or Maserati Khasmin. It quickly became Lotus's commercial trump card, competing with the Porsche 911 and Ferrari 308. Its 160 hp engine was rapidly improved over the years, notably with the release of the Turbo version of the Esprit S2, with no less than 210 hp. The S3 version offered a choice of naturally-aspirated or supercharged engines, and greatly improved reliability.
In the mid-1980s, a change was called for at Lotus. Peter Stevens' team was commissioned to tackle the "X180" project, the updating of the Lotus Esprit design. The line designed by Giugiaro, a key feature of the Esprit, was aging and in need of renewal. The design team is busy rounding off the edges, but without taking away the soul. The front fascias are better integrated, but the characteristic low profile and flat windscreen are retained. The air intakes have been completely redesigned and the lights fully integrated. Inside, the central instrument console and steering wheel have been redesigned. The seats now have more position adjustments, but the semi-recumbent driving position remains.
As for the engine, Lotus retains its Type 910, and with a few modifications transforms it into the 910 "S" for the Turbo SE. Injection is now fully electronically controlled, while the turbocharger is equipped with an overboost, offering 20 extra horsepower for a short time. The 264 horsepower deployed at 6,500 rpm don't disappoint, delivering 0-100 kph in 5.0 seconds and a top speed of 262 kph. The design transition from the S1 is more than successful, allowing the Lotus Esprit to continue on its way, both on the road and in the studio. Praised by Julia Roberts and Sharon Stone in their films "Pretty Woman" and "Basic Instinct" respectively, this is true English class.
