Our Mercedes 280 SL Pagoda, with 102,165 km on the odometer, not under warranty, was put on the road on January 2, 1971 in the United States. Imported into France in 2015, its current owner acquired it the same year.

Mercedes-Benz had never originally intended to produce a road version of the 300SL. Instead, on the advice of renowned importer Max Hoffman, the brand unveiled its public version at the 1954 New York Auto Show. Although a great success, the 300SL was not produced for very long, mainly due to its high production costs. The German marque decided to produce a car that would inspire just as much desire, built from parts that already existed. This is the 190SL. From 1955 to 1963, the 190SL was a great success. Its design and 4-cylinder engine were enthusiastically adopted. Its power would raise questions in the 1960s, prompting its replacement by a new SL, the W113.
Designed by Paul Bracq, the 230SL quickly earned the nickname "Pagoda", in reference to its roof and distinctive shape. The W113 is the first mass-produced SL with a 6-cylinder engine. It was produced from 1963 to 1971, and came in 3 distinct versions. The 230SL offered 148 hp and 196 Nm of torque, and remained in production until 1967. It was replaced by the 250SL until 1968 (148 hp and 216 Nm) and by the 280SL from 1967 to 1971 (168 hp and 244 Nm). Some 49,000 examples of the Pagoda were sold, making it one of the most beautiful cars of all time.
