The proposed car is a 1967 Mercedes 250 SL. Second version of the W113, the 250 SL was produced from 1966 to 1968 in 5,196 copies (out of 48,812 units in total), making it the rarest and most sought after by collectors.
It benefits from a re-boring that increases the engine from 2.3 liters to 2.5 liters, improving its torque but leaving its power unchanged. Far from being a sports car, the 250 SL offers a Grand Touring driving experience, ideal for comfortable rides at moderate speeds.
Delivered in a sublime metallic beige exterior color, also present on the hubcaps, the center of the steering wheel or the dashboard, the car displays an irreproachable general condition. Entirely restored by Mercedes Blois ten years ago, the model has 33,000 kilometers and benefits from numerous original Mercedes parts invoices, as well as an appraisal evaluating its value at 115,000€.
This extremely rare example combines an exceptional quality of finish for its time, an outstanding color and an extremely rigorous restoration. Without forgetting its greatest strength which is none other than its audacious and timeless design, of which we, as French, can pride ourselves on being the architects.
Launched in the 1950s with the 300 SL and 190 SL duo, the SL range for "Sport Leicht" (literally Light Sport) would later give birth to the Mercedes 230 SL. Presented in 1963, the roadster offers a design and new technologies, in order to offer a middle ground between the 300 SL too inaccessible and the 190 SL beginning to suffer from its lack of power.
The design of the 230 SL, commonly known as the "Pagoda" because of the concave shape of its hard top reminiscent of Buddhist temples, is the work of Paul Bracq. In total rupture with the pulpy lines of the magnificent 190 SL, the new roadster immediately seduces so much it cuts with the codes of its time.
For the record, the 230 SL's fender extensions are the result of a mistake in the design of its platform, forcing the design team to widen its wheel arches. This platform is derived from the S class of the time in a shortened version. The roadster will also follow the evolution of its engine.
