Singularity of the car

  • Excellent condition
  • Complete history
  • One of the world's most beautiful cars

Our Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Pagoda was delivered new from Germany and put on the road on June 30, 1969. It was imported into France in 2020 and acquired by its current owner in 2023.

This example is presented in a Crème color, combined with white-sided wheels and original black and silver rims, as well as a black leather interior. It also features a brown hard top. It also features air-conditioning, a rarity on Pagodas. This 280SL has a very slight defect in the paintwork on the hood following a touch-up.

Mechanically, this 280SL is powered by a 168 hp 6-cylinder engine, combined with a 4-speed manual gearbox. Its mechanical performance is beyond reproach. Maintenance is carried out at Mercedes Centers and by classic car specialists. The original owner's booklet provides a complete history of the car. The last overhaul in 2020 cost around €25,000.

Here are the options and equipment available on this model:

  • Brown hard top with storage bag and hard top holder.
  • Hood (new)
  • Air conditioning
  • Tinted windows
  • Genuine car radio
  • Head rests

Historical summary of the model

Mercedes-Benz had never originally intended to produce a road version of the 300SL. Instead, on the advice of renowned importer Max Hoffman, the brand unveiled its public version at the 1954 New York Auto Show. Although a great success, the 300SL was not produced for very long, mainly due to its high production costs. The German marque decided to produce a car that would inspire just as much desire, built from parts that already existed. This is the 190SL. From 1955 to 1963, the 190SL was a great success. Its design and 4-cylinder engine were enthusiastically adopted. Its power would raise questions in the 1960s, prompting its replacement by a new SL, the W113.

Designed by Paul Bracq, the 230SL quickly earned the nickname "Pagoda", in reference to its roof and distinctive shape. The W113 is the first mass-produced SL with a 6-cylinder engine. It was produced from 1963 to 1971, and came in 3 distinct versions. The 230SL offered 148 hp and 196 Nm of torque, and remained in production until 1967. It was replaced by the 250SL until 1968 (148 hp and 216 Nm) and by the 280SL from 1967 to 1971 (168 hp and 244 Nm). Some 49,000 examples of the Pagoda were sold, making it one of the most beautiful cars of all time.
