The Porsche 981, unveiled at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, is the third generation of the Boxster and Cayman. It adopts a new design language inspired by the 911 (991) and 918, with significant chassis improvements: 40% greater rigidity, wider tracks and a longer wheelbase. The 981 is the first Boxster to feature electronic power steering and an electric parking brake.
The standard Boxster is powered by a 260 hp, 2.7-liter flat-6 engine, while the S version features a 310 hp, 3.4-liter unit. A 6-speed manual gearbox is standard, with a 7-speed PDK option. Technologies such as Porsche Torque Vectoring and the Sport Chrono pack enhance performance and efficiency.
In 2014, the range was extended with the Boxster GTS, offering an extra 15 hp thanks to the 3.4-liter engine.
The most extreme model, the Boxster Spyder, was introduced in 2015. Lightened to 1,315 kg, it features a 3.8-liter flat-6 engine with 375 hp. It is only available with a 6-speed manual gearbox and features lightweight elements such as aluminum doors and a manual canvas roof. Production of the Spyder was limited to 2,486 units.
