Our Beck Spyder, a replica of the legendary Porsche 550 Spyder, was launched in California in January 1985. It was imported into France on May 4, 2015 and has 31,000 km on the clock.
This example comes in a Light Grey Metallic/Silver hue, with a Boxster red leather interior, offering the classic, elegant combination of the 550 Spyder. The car is in very good condition, both in terms of bodywork and interior.
Mechanically, this Beck Spyder is equipped with a 2.2L engine developing 130 hp, combined with a manual gearbox. It rests on a tubular chassis bearing the number 45. Its engine compartment is very clean, and it is fitted with a Magnaflow exhaust and tonneau cover.
This vehicle has been expertly maintained, with a complete file of invoices and impressive historical documentation including period technical sketches. The rims are new and original, and the tires are in very good condition. The car has undergone several modifications and improvements, including the addition of disc brakes and a dual braking system. The running gear has been rebuilt, the gear selector is new, and an overhaul including oil change, carburetor and ignition was carried out only 700 km ago.
The Porsche 550 Spyder, inspired by Ferry Porsche's Porsche 356 and Walter Glöckler's prototypes, was designed for racing. Presented at the 1953 Paris Motor Show, it was renowned for its low chassis, ideal for racing. In 1954, former F1 driver Hans Herrmann drove the 550 under closed railway gates at the Mille Miglia, demonstrating its agility.
The first three hand-built prototypes were victorious from the outset, notably at the Nürburgring in 1953, the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Carrera Panamericana in the same year. The 550 Spyder, recognizable by its colored arrows on the rear fenders, often finished in the top three of its class. In 1956, the 550A version, with a lighter, stiffer chassis, gave Porsche its first major overall victory at the Targa Florio.
One of 90 Porsche 550s, nicknamed "Little Bastard" by actor James Dean, was involved in a fatal accident in 1955. Dean had bought the car to take part in a race in Salinas, California, but was tragically killed on the way. The popular 550 Spyder is reproduced by a number of companies, including California-based Beck, which offers the most accurate replicas on the market. The Beck Spyder, produced at a rate of 5 units per year, is a virtually identical replica of the 550 Spyder.
