- First model after Enzo Ferrari's death
Produced from 1990 onwards, the Ferrari 348 took several years to find its place in the range and in the hearts of Ferrari fans. Unveiled a year after Enzo Ferrari's death, the "Commandatore" and his ideas were missed by his teams. The Ferrari 348 is therefore the first post-Enzo Ferrari, and has its work cut out to satisfy customers. At the end of 1993, Ferrari turned things around and designed the Ferrari 348 GTB, an improved version of its 348.
Launched on February 8, 1994, this example of the Ferrari 348 GTB has a complete history tracing it all the way back to its first sale. Sold in Berlin, Germany, on February 10, 1994, it remained in the hands of its first owner for 12 years. After 68,000 km and 3 overhauls at a Ferrari dealership, it was sold to a German garage. Its second owner acquired it in July 2006 for a period of 7 years and also carried out 3 overhauls at Ferrari, before selling it in Austria to a specialist garage. At the end of 2015, the current owner purchased this 348 GTB with 81,000km on the clock.
Rigorously maintained by its various owners with regular servicing, this 348 GTB, produced in just over 220 examples, is in excellent condition and has 91,750 km on the clock. Configured in Ferrari Red, the bodywork is flawless and the front bumper has been repainted. The black interior is also in excellent condition. The upholstery shows very few signs of use for its age, and the dashboard is fully functional. The interior plastics have been refinished to compensate for the recurring problems encountered on '90s models, and the interior leathers are not discolored and retain a very clean appearance. The body, door and boot alignments are flawless, and the body is sound.
Mechanically, its V8 engine, installed in a 90-degree rear longitudinal position, develops its 320hp at 7,200 rpm without a hitch. Start-up is a breeze, and there's no extraneous noise. The 348 GTB's vocals range from raucous to screeching at the ignition switch, an audible pleasure that has remained unchanged since 1994. Coupled with a 5-speed manual gearbox, driving sensations are excellent.
The current owner has taken many steps to ensure that this 348 GTB remains in the best possible condition. This example has a Ferrari certificate of conformity produced by the Concession Ferrari Palau Mérignac and issued by the parent company. It also benefited in 2016 from a major €7,000 overhaul and a few additions. It also has an additional starter power system, and an anti-theft circuit breaker. In 2020, both catalytic converters and Lambda probes were replaced. Its final overhaul is carried out in 2021 at the Palau Ferrari dealership. A spare set of keys, the original leather pouch, the service booklet and the original tool case are supplied with the car.
The Ferrari 348 GTB is a distinctive milestone in the history of the prestigious Italian Ferrari marque. Inaugurated in 1989, this car represents a landmark transition in the design and performance of the Maranello firm's mid-rear-engined V8 models. After the success of the 328 series, Ferrari was under pressure to produce a worthy successor. The answer was the 348, designed to compete directly with other supercars of the period.
Aesthetically, the 348 has borrowed elements from the legendary F40, notably in the gridded side panels and taillight arrangement. However, it retained its own identity by incorporating more sculpted lines, with a lower profile and assertive visual presence. Beneath this bodywork, the 348's chassis was built from a steel structure with tubular sections, ensuring rigidity and lightness. The engine position was longitudinal, unlike the 328 which was transverse, with a transverse gearbox - a first for a Ferrari production model.
Under the hood, the 348 was powered by a naturally aspirated 3.4-liter V8 engine. This block produced 300 hp at 7,200 rpm and 324 Nm of torque at 5,000 rpm. Coupled with a five-speed manual gearbox, it propelled the car to a top speed of around 275 km/h and enabled it to reach 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds. In terms of suspension, the 348 used superimposed double wishbones front and rear. Four-wheel ventilated disc brakes, combined with ABS, ensured powerful stopping power.
Although GTB is the basic coupé model, the 348 was also available in Spider (cabriolet) and GTS versions. Each of these variants made specific modifications to suit its orientation, while retaining the heart and soul of the original model. On its release, the 348 GTB was greeted with mixed reviews. Some praised its bold design and performance, while others criticized certain aspects of its handling. Over time, however, it became an integral part of Ferrari history, testifying to a period of transition and evolution for the brand.
Today, the Ferrari 348 GTB is considered a modern classic, a testament to Italian engineering and design in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Its contribution to the Ferrari heritage, both technically and aesthetically, is undeniable. It remains an essential link in the company's long chain of innovations and achievements.
