The car offered is a 1990 Ferrari 348 TB, French, delivered in its original Rosso Corsa color combined with 17 inch wheels and a very well preserved black leather interior. Equipped with a 5-speed manual gearbox, it belongs to the vintage that corrected the clutch defect of the first versions. The model has 59,000 kilometers on it and has a maintenance booklet, tool kit, original manual and numerous invoices. A major maintenance as well as the replacement of the timing belt will be done for the sale.
Always used and maintained with care and rigor, the car shows a very good body condition. It has never been repainted. There is no trace of rust, corrosion or paint defects. Moreover, the chassis is sound and the engine runs perfectly.
In the twilight of the 1980s, the oil crises hit the world economy hard and hit the car manufacturers hard. In parallel to this unfavorable economic context, Ferrari was strongly affected by the loss of the Commandatore. To make matters worse, the Maranello firm's cash flow was in bad shape and the brand's future was in danger.
Before his death, Enzo Ferrari wanted to design a model to replace the 328, which was then the entry-level car of choice for Ferrari. Long term projects named Dino and 408 will thus be merged to lead to a car, the 348.
Unveiled at the 1989 Frankfurt Motor Show, the first 348 was hastily released and had a haphazard design that was a sign of premature development. The first berlinetta to be designed after the Enzo Ferrari era did not have good press. It had a demanding driving style, no steering gear, no electronic aids and a natural tendency to oversteer. Designed as a Ferrari of the 70s and 80s, it required constant attention or it would have been surprised.
The 348 is named after its 3.4-liter V8 derived from the 328 and identical to that of the Mondial T released a little earlier. Equipped with Bosch fuel injection, it develops 300 horsepower at 7,200 rpm. Full on all levels, smooth and torquey, the engine easily climbs in the revs and gratifies the driver with a bewitching melody typical of the models stamped with the Cavallino. The engine is backed up by a 5-speed manual transmission that is firm, well spaced and convincing in every way. Only a weakness in the clutch noticed on the first vintage will be corrected in the following year.
The design of the 348 is the work of the unavoidable Pininfarina. Its line is derived from its predecessor, the 328, and it has retractable lights like the Ferraris of the 1980s, while its rear grilles and side gills are taken directly from the V12 Testarossa. This familiarity with the great Ferrari earned it the nickname "little Testarossa".
Designed as an old-fashioned Ferrari, the 348 is now showing a renewed interest among collectors looking for pure and authentic driving sensations.
