Unveiled at the 1999 Geneva Motor Show, the 360 Modena had the difficult task of marking a real break with its predecessors and thus bringing Ferrari from the 20th century to the 21st. But it is not easy to replace a car that has been unanimously acclaimed like the F355. Many criticisms have been made about its design, which is considered too smooth by some.
The pop-up headlights and stretched lines present on its predecessors have been replaced by fixed headlights and rounder lines, resulting from extensive work on aerodynamics in the wind tunnel. The 360 has a completely new front end, without a grille, replaced by two air intakes on either side of the front bumper. In addition to its striking design, the 360 Modena boasts a host of technological innovations to enhance performance and ease of use.
The Cinquevalvole V8 (for 5 valves per cylinder), from the 355, increases to 3.6 liters and develops a maximum power of 400 horsepower at 8500 rpm, barely 300 rpm before the break. Coupled with the engine, an active exhaust system gives the 360 a striking and unmistakable sound. A greatly improved electronic management system gives the sedan a much more accessible behavior for the average person.
As usual, Ferrari doesn't hesitate to take technologies developed in F1 and adapt them to its touring cars. The 360 took advantage of this tradition by receiving an F1 automatic gearbox, much more efficient and relevant than on the 355, a flat bottom, a functional air extractor, as well as a chassis and a body entirely made of aluminum, allowing it to show a lower weight compared to the 355, despite its 20 cm extra.
