Initiated in 2014 by the Cayman 981, the GT4 label will quickly prove to be an excellent alternative to the 911 GT3 for all trackday enthusiasts. A naturally aspirated engine in a central rear position, a rigid chassis, an incisive front end and an excellent power-to-weight ratio, the GT4's recipe is unstoppable.
The 718s released in 2016 marked the Boxster/Cayman range's switch from the flat-six atmo to the flat-4 turbo. This strategic choice was difficult to accept by some of the brand's fans, who considered the flat-six to be unstoppable. The announcement of the GT4 type 718 in 2019 came at the right time to restore the image of the model.
This one is equipped with a version re-bored to 4.0 liters and "de-turbalised" from the 3.0 supercharged from the 911 Carrera. Aesthetically, only a few elements distinguish it from the GT4 981, it has a more open front bumper, a new light signature, a wider rear diffuser and two exhaust outlets on the sides instead of in the center.
The GT4 718 also marks the arrival of the optional PDK transmission. In addition, the manual transmission offers precise locks, perfect throw and has a deactivatable automatic heel-toe, allowing for a more engaging drive and less smoothed out feel.
Moreover, its power is increased to 420 horsepower (35 horsepower more than the 981 GT4) and an identical maximum torque occurring slightly later than its predecessor. Thus, the 0 to 100 is unchanged with 4.4 seconds, but the aerodynamic support increased by 50% allows the GT4 718 to complete the Nürburgring lap in 12 seconds less than a GT4 981.
The perfect balance of the 718 GT4 makes it particularly considerate and gives it such efficiency in corners that even much more powerful or expensive cars struggle to keep up.
