The successor to the 993 Turbo, the 996 Turbo, despite the change in cooling system much criticized by Porsche purists, offers the very best of the German brand's technical and engineering expertise. With its increased performance, unrivalled driving sensations and reworked design, the new generation, somewhere between a GT and a super-sports car, is a real eye-catcher.
Part of the 2001 model year, this 996 Turbo is in remarkable condition. Originally from France, it was sold new to its first owner and passed through the hands of a total of 5 owners. Given its current condition, this example has undoubtedly passed through the hands of enthusiasts who have preserved its original condition and used it with respect.
Maintained exclusively at Porsche until 2011, it will then be taken care of by renowned brand specialists, before returning to the Centre Porsche Classic workshops. Mechanical work will then be carried out, and from 2021 to 2023 she will benefit from more than €20,000 in expenses to keep her in top condition. Engine, gearbox and axle oil changes will be carried out, along with a clutch replacement.
With 123,500 km on the clock, this car is in impressive condition. The Arctic Grey bodywork is flawless and looks as good as new. The paintwork is bright and deep, and needs no touching up. The interior is also in excellent condition. Covered in black leather, the seats, dashboard, steering wheel and other components are well preserved, and the car's instrumentation is also in good working order.
The powertrain of this 996 Turbo is in perfect health, and the 420hp 3.6-liter flat-6 combined with two turbochargers works like a charm. Brutal power, as well as smooth driving at low revs, are intact. Although a little more subdued than on previous generations, the engine is still very vocal, especially at high revs.
With a final service due in June 2023, this model is ready to go as soon as it is purchased. The optional PCM (Porsche Communication Management) has been replaced by a new Porsche multimedia module with current connectivity. A Porsche "996 Turbo" cover is supplied.
A copy with many options, here is a non-exhaustive list:
Born at the heart of Porsche's rich history, the 996 Turbo represents a milestone in the long line of Porsche 911s. It made its debut in the late 1990s, a period marked by major technological developments in the automotive world.
The 996 Turbo was unveiled to the public in 2000. However, its genesis goes back much further. It is the successor to the 993 Turbo, which was the last 911 with an air-cooled engine. The switch to water-cooling in the 996 generation was a major change for Porsche, both in terms of engineering and purist acceptance.
Under the hood, the 996 Turbo is powered by a 3.6-liter flat-six engine with twin turbochargers, producing 420 hp. This engine is mated to a six-speed manual transmission or, as an option, a five-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission. With this engine, the 996 Turbo is capable of a top speed of almost 300 km/h, and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.2 seconds. Power is transmitted to all four wheels via Porsche's all-wheel drive system, guaranteeing enhanced grip and optimum roadholding. On the technical front, this generation has also introduced the VarioCam Plus system, an innovation in variable valve timing management that optimizes power, torque and fuel consumption.
Externally, the 996 Turbo is distinguished by its enlarged front air intakes, more muscular fenders and fixed rear spoiler, characteristic elements that set it apart from its atmospheric counterparts. These elements are not only aesthetic, but also have an essential aerodynamic function, ensuring adequate cooling and downforce at high speeds.
The Porsche 996 Turbo occupies a significant place in the history of the German marque. It symbolizes a period of transition, where tradition and innovation coexist. With its technical advances, it has been able to meet the growing demands of the market while preserving the very essence of what it means to be a Porsche 911.
Its legacy lives on today, as it serves as a benchmark for future generations of Turbo models, fusing performance, technology and design.
