Introduced in the 1990s, the Porsche 911 Type 996 marked a stylistic and technological break with previous models. Notable changes included the use of water cooling and oval-shaped headlamps, which caused controversy among enthusiasts. Technological and stylistic transitions were important for the rest of the range, and the 996 made them possible, while retaining its popularity.

This Porsche 911 Type 996 Carrera 4 was put on the road in France on November 14, 2000. It was purchased at the Centre Porsche Paris 16 by its first owner, and bought by a Porsche specialist in May 2023. The first owner is the only one to have registered the car, as the specialist has not used it. This car is therefore a first-hand example, a rare occurrence these days. With only 59,550 kilometers on the odometer, this Porsche is in very good overall condition. Configured in Sealgrau color, the bodywork is in good condition. A door dent is visible on the driver's door, but will be removed for sale. There is a slight varnish problem on the periphery of 2 rims. Apart from this defect, the bodywork and exterior components are in very good condition, with no scratches or dents. This model has Porsche side stickers, which can be easily removed if required. Inside, the seats, steering wheel, doors and dashboard are covered in Terracotta leather and are in excellent condition. There are no signs of wear. The on-board instrumentation functions normally. A connected Porsche Classic multimedia system has recently been added.

Mechanically, this Porsche 996 Carrera 4 is in excellent condition. The engine starts right up, and there's not a sound to be heard during the drive. The 3.4L flat 6 offers 296 hp, transmitted through a 5-speed Tiptronic automatic gearbox.

This car is serviced at the Centre Porsche Paris16 and Levallois. It has also benefited from a general overhaul by Miramond Dan Auto. Numerous invoices are available, as well as a service booklet. The last service was carried out in June 2023. The consumables are in perfect condition and do not need to be changed.

Historical summary of the model

The Porsche 911 Type 996 Carrera 4 represents a significant milestone in the evolution of the 911 range, introduced by Porsche in the late 1990s. This model marks a break with its predecessors in several respects, both in terms of design and technology.

The 996 was developed under the direction of Harm Lagaay with the intention of modernizing the 911 while reducing production costs. Introduced in 1997, the 996 is notable for being the first 911 to abandon the traditional air-cooled engine, in favor of a water-cooled one. This change was in response to stricter environmental requirements and the need for greater power and reliability. The engine of the 996 Carrera 4 is a 3.4-liter flat-six, initially producing 296 hp. In 2001, displacement was increased to 3.6 liters, bringing power to 320 hp. This engine was mated to a six-speed manual gearbox or, as an option, a five-speed Tiptronic automatic gearbox.

The Carrera 4 was distinguished by its all-wheel drive system. This system distributed torque between the front and rear axles, improving traction and stability, particularly in difficult driving conditions. Aesthetically, the 996 introduced a significantly different design from its predecessors. The front headlamps, in particular, broke with the traditional round shape for a more oval one, shared with the Porsche Boxster of the time, which was a point of controversy among enthusiasts of the brand. The interior was also completely redesigned, offering a higher level of comfort and finish quality than previous models.

The Carrera 4 accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in around 5 seconds, with a top speed close to 280 km/h. This performance was complemented by improvements to the chassis and suspension, making the car more agile and responsive. The launch of the 996 Carrera 4 was greeted with mixed reviews, due to its radical changes. Nevertheless, it played a crucial role in modernizing the 911 range and laid the foundations for future developments. It also helped Porsche through a financially difficult period by increasing production efficiency.

The Porsche 911 Type 996 Carrera 4 remains an important chapter in the history of the 911. Although controversial for some of its changes, it was a necessary step and helped shape the future of the Porsche brand.
