This first-generation 928 was sold new on May 30, 1978 to a 1st owner living in Stuttgart, the birthplace of the Porsche brand.

From all the documents accompanying the car, it appears that this first owner kept it for over 20 years, covering only around 80,000 km during this long period.

A 2nd owner owned this 928 in the early 2000s. Although he too drove the car infrequently (85,822 km - invoice dated 22/4/2003 and 90,129 km - invoice dated 24/07/2006), he kept it in perfect condition, as evidenced by the numerous invoices in his name on file. He also made a minor modification to the 928's appearance, equipping it with wider rims at the rear, combined with special springs that lower the car slightly (all TÜV-approved parts).

Our 928 arrived in France in May 2007 when the 3rd owner purchased it from Porsche specialist DLS in Fellbach, near Stuttgart.

With a mileage of 91344 km, it was one of the most beautiful and expensive 928 Series 1 on the market at the time.

Finally, totalling 101,000 km in 2014, the 928 changes hands one last time with an owner fascinated by the unique lines of this Porsche.

The central part of the "Tennis" velvet upholstery was redone at their request with the original Porsche material in 2015 (including the driver's seat foams), as was the leather on the steering wheel.

Recently, the latter reluctantly decided to part with it, after noticing that it was no longer driving their 928 sufficiently in recent years.

In the meantime, the 928 has been meticulously maintained by recognized specialists, right up to the latest overhaul carried out recently for the sale, including a brake (caliper) overhaul.

As an unrestored car in its original state, this 928 is in remarkable condition for its 45 years. A few minor paint defects will come to light on close inspection, but nothing that would require immediate repair or detract from the car's appearance.

As we have seen, the interior has been reworked where necessary, and is therefore impeccable.

The engine starts up instantly, hot or cold, with a pleasant, cavernous growl, and still delivers pleasant torque and power delivery, giving the impression of never having to exert yourself.

It can't be said often enough: the automatic gearbox (originally from Mercedes and chosen by Porsche for its responsiveness) is perfectly suited to the GT spirit of the 928, providing a supple, relaxed driving experience. On our 928, it shifted perfectly and downshifted appropriately according to throttle demand, without the kick-down and brutality that accompany this maneuver on most automatic gearboxes of the time.

Last but not least, the brakes, freshly overhauled by a specialist, provide the deceleration in line with the 928's still-top-of-the-range performance.

In short, a beautiful and rare original 928, always driven but with low mileage, well maintained and highly desirable in this Indischrot color that enhances the curves of the bodywork.

Historical summary of the model

At the dawn of the 1970s, Porsche wanted to break away from its image as a single-model brand. And despite the resounding success of the 911, some of the managers at Zuffenhausen tried to push the emblematic coupe towards the exit. Indeed, the layout of its backpack flat-six was considered outdated and without a future. A statement that seems comical in retrospect, but which was the subject of fierce debate at the time.

This desire to diversify led to the development of new bodies and engines, giving rise to the PMA (Porsche front-engine) models such as the 944 and 928, the latter embodying Porsche's desire to position a car in the GT 2+2 sports car market. It began its development phase in 1971 and went into production 6 years later, in 1977. Equipped with a front-mounted 4.5-liter V8, its avant-garde design is the antithesis of that of the 911. And like all PMAs, it didn't go down too well with Porsche enthusiasts, who regarded the new architecture as sacrilegious. But no matter, this was not the car's core target market. Largely aimed at the American public, its V8 and automatic gearbox quickly made it popular across the Atlantic.

Surprisingly, the 928 enjoyed a longevity of 18 years, during which time it went through a succession of increasingly powerful and accomplished versions. In 1986, the Porsche 928 was redesigned and marketed as the S4, an upgraded version of the S2 with a 320 hp 5.0 L V8 engine. The front and rear fascias were redesigned to improve aerodynamics, and a rear spoiler was added to improve downforce at high speeds.
