Singularity of the car

The offered example is a 1992 Porsche 928 GTS delivered in an original midnight blue with some minor age-related flaws, accompanied by a very well preserved beige grey interior. Equipped with a four-speed automatic transmission, it also comes with numerous options such as electric backrest adjustment, sunroof, as well as front and rear spoilers.

The coupe has 155,000 kilometers on it and the engine has undergone a complete rebuild including the replacement of both cylinder heads, timing belt, water pump, oil pump, fuel pump, hoses, gaskets and water radiator. The air conditioning system was also overhauled.

Long disliked on the old continent, the 928 GTS is now attracting increasing interest from collectors, partly for its confidential production and partly for its avant-garde and original character. Its former defects have become sought-after qualities. This car is in very good condition and its mechanics have been largely revised and made more reliable.

Historical summary of the model

At the dawn of the 1970s, Porsche wanted to break away from its image as a single-model brand. And despite the resounding success of the 911, some of the managers at Zuffenhausen tried to push the emblematic coupe towards the exit. Indeed, the layout of its backpack flat-six was considered outdated and without a future. A statement that seems comical in retrospect, but which was the subject of fierce debate at the time.

This will of diversification will be translated by the development of new bodies and engines giving birth to the PMA (Porsche with front engine) such as the 944 and 928.

The latter embodies Porsche's desire to position a car in the 2+2 sports GT market. It began its development phase in 1971 and went into production 6 years later in 1977. Equipped with a 4.5-liter V8 engine in the front position, it has an avant-garde design that is the opposite of the 911. And like all PMAs, it was not exactly unanimous among Porsche enthusiasts, who considered this new architecture to be sacrilegious. But no matter, its core target was not here. Largely intended for the American public, its V8 and automatic gearbox quickly made it popular across the Atlantic.

Surprisingly, the 928 will have a longevity of 18 years during which several versions always more powerful and successful. Honorable mention to the 928 CS and its 320 horsepower which in 1986 became the fastest production car marketed in the USA.

The model we present is a 928 GTS. The ultimate version of the 928, it is powered by a 5.4-liter V8 that develops 350 horsepower. Its long, drooping front hood and two round pop-up headlights give it a frog-like appearance, while its rounded stern is accentuated by wide fenders that reinforce the coupe's body-built, ready-to-bounce look. The GTS version is also identifiable by its Cup mirrors and rims, its front and rear spoilers, as well as its reflective strip linking the two rear lights.

On the road, it has a behavior halfway between the muscle car and the grand touring coupe. Its 350 horsepower allow it to sprint from 0 to 100 in 5.6 seconds and reach a speed of 276 km/h. It offers first-rate performance in a straight line, but its weight of 1,700 kg in running order and its automatic gearbox do it a disservice in the sporting arena.
