Presented in 1999 at the Stuttgart Motor Show, the Porsche 996 Turbo marks a turning point in the philosophy of the Turbo models. It has a sober and elegant design, reflecting the brand's desire to break away from the aggressive lines of its predecessors, the 993 Turbo and 964 Turbo.
Its design is sober and consensual, but its performance is not. Equipped with a 3.6 twin-turbo flat-six sharing the same "Mezger" block as the 996 GT2 and the rare 911 GT1 winner of the 1996 Le Mans 24-hour race, it boasts 420 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and an impressive 560 Nm of torque available from 2,700 rpm. It was also the first 911 to be equipped with a permanent all-wheel drive system and a called PSM. These are developments that will not fail to annoy purists, but which are nevertheless essential to tame the impressive cavalry of the model.
While its predecessors were more suited to the track, they suffered from a sometimes tricky handling due to a backpack engine that felt like it was all in the back, coupled with a turbo effect that could be quite trapping. The 996 Turbo wipes the slate clean and transforms itself into the ultimate GT that combines performance, comfort, versatility and reliability.
With its supercar-like performance, it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds and passes the 300 km/h mark, making it the spearhead of the Zuffenhausen-based brand alongside the 996 GT2. Its two turbos and all-wheel drive make it extremely efficient in a straight line, giving the driver the impression of being at the controls of a torpedo. On the other hand, its intrinsic qualities play tricks on it to be really efficient on tracks and winding roads. Too heavy, too powerful, with a natural tendency to understeer because of its 4-wheel drive, the 996 Turbo prefers fast curves to hairpin turns.
