The Porsche Boxster 981 GTS, introduced to the Porsche range in 2014, marks a significant evolution of the Boxster series, which began in 1996. The 981 series, launched in 2012, represented a major overhaul of the previous generation, the 987, with substantial improvements in design, performance and technology. The GTS, an acronym for "Gran Turismo Sport", was designed to offer a more dynamic driving experience and enhanced performance compared to the base and S Boxster models.
Under the hood, the Boxster 981 GTS is powered by a 3.4-liter, 6-cylinder boxer engine, producing 330 hp (246 kW) at 6,700 rpm and maximum torque of 370 Nm available between 4,500 and 5,800 rpm. This engine is an upgraded version of the one found in the Boxster S, offering an increase of 15 hp and 10 Nm of torque. This model is available with two transmission options: a 6-speed manual gearbox and a 7-speed PDK dual-clutch automated gearbox. The Boxster GTS accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds with the manual transmission, rising to 4.6 seconds with the PDK. Top speed is 281 km/h with manual transmission and 279 km/h with PDK.
Aesthetically, the Boxster 981 GTS boasts a number of special features, including redesigned front and rear bumpers, larger air intakes, and an enhanced interior with extensive customization options. Standard equipment includes 20-inch wheels, a sports exhaust system, and Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), which lowers the car by 10 mm. The GTS model also benefits from the inclusion of the Sport Chrono Package, enhancing dynamic performance with an additional driving mode, quicker throttle response and dynamic adjustment of engine mounts. Inside, Alcantara sports seats and a sports steering wheel with paddle shifters reflect the vehicle's performance orientation.
From a technological standpoint, the Boxster GTS is equipped with systems such as Porsche Communication Management (PCM), a touchscreen for the navigation and entertainment system, and various driving aids. Production of the 981 series ended in 2016, making the Boxster 981 GTS one of the last models of this generation before the introduction of the 718 Boxster, which introduced turbocharged four-cylinder engines, marking a significant change in Porsche's powertrain strategy for this vehicle range.
