After the great success of the Porsche Cayenne unveiled in 2002, Porsche is opening up a new market. Luxury SUVs (Sport Utility Vehicles) are on a roll, so much so that a second model is planned. Announced in 2011, the Porsche Macan is presented at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto-Show.
A descendant of the Cayenne, the Macan differs in size and character. Smaller, less powerful, but also less expensive, it offers an interesting in-between between a Cayenne and a 911. The Macan S and Macan Turbo will be the first two versions in 2014.
The Macan Turbo is equipped with a 3.6-liter twin-turbo V6 engine developing 400 hp, and a 7-speed PDK gearbox, marking the end of manual gearboxes in SUVs. The whole package is integrated into a dynamic styling similar to that of the Panamera. The Macan is 7 cm shorter and 10 cm longer than the Cayenne.
The interior is in keeping with Porsche's quality standards, but offers less space than its Cayenne counterpart. These differences make the Macan a true compromise, both sporty and practical.
A great success from the outset, the Macan exceeded 350,000 units produced 4 years after its first appearance, and 800,000 units by 2023, representing 30 to 40% of Porsche's annual sales - a historic achievement.
