Our Ferrari 308 GTB Vetroresina was delivered new in Italy and put on the road on April 6, 1988. It was sold new by Fiorano Concessionaria Veneto in Milan in 1976, then purchased by its second owner, a Frenchman, in 2008. Its current owner acquired it in March 2024.
This example is in perfect overall condition. In a Rosso Corsa hue, combined with grey 5-spoke wheels, black leather interior and red carpets, this 308 GTB is flawless.
Mechanically, its performance is beyond reproach. The 255 hp 2.9L V8, combined with a 5-speed reverse manual gearbox, delivers excellent performance. Maintenance is carried out at a Ferrari Centre and then at a specialist garage. The service booklet and numerous invoices are available. The last service was carried out at Ferrari SF Côte d'Azur in November 2023. This car was certified by Ferrari Classiche in June 2016.
A direct descendant of the Dino 246 GT, the Ferrari 308 GTB was developed to offer customers a new, less expensive two-seater sedan, but also to make up for the lack of success of the Dino 308 GT4. The latter's sales figures collapsed in 1980, mainly due to the addition of unsightly retractable bumpers to the American version, less power and a significant weight gain. The 308 GT4, with its 2+2 seats, nevertheless sold no fewer than 3,636 units.
The Ferrari 308 GTB was designed by Leonardo Fioravanti, a designer at Pininfarina. His first design attempts were quite successful, and he quickly decided to transform his model into a polyester composite. A perfect success, the 308 GTB and its distinctive bodywork earned the nickname "Vetroresina", the name of the composite material in Italian. The first 308 GTB Vetroresina was presented at the Paris Motor Show in October 1975. Based on the chassis of the Dino 246 GT, the 308 GTB took over the already powerful V8 from the 308 GT4. Most importantly, the 308 GTB was officially presented under the Ferrari badge, making it the first V8-powered Ferrari. In terms of design, the 308 GTB is more than appreciated by customers. Its design retains some of the curves of the Dino 246, and breaks with the angular design of the 308 GT4. The hood is flat, topped by pop-up headlights, and the entire car remains under 1m12. The special bodywork saves a few kilos, for a total of around 1,250 kilos.
The Vetroresina version was produced in 808 units until May 1977, giving the factories time to perfect the tools needed to shape the steel. The 308 GTBs produced after this date would therefore abandon the Vetroresina body. The 808 models differ in a few details, notably the reversing light, integrated directly into the rear bumper, and the all-orange indicators. The V8 engine produces some 255 hp, at least theoretically, while the gearbox has a little surprise in store for the uninitiated, with an inverted gearshift.
