Eager to qualify a car in Group 4, Porsche presented at the 1973 Frankfurt Motor Show a non-running prototype of the future Porsche 930 Turbo. Equipped with a real version of the 2.7-liter flat-six of the Carrera RS 2.7 increased to 3.0 liters and supercharged by a turbo, the 911 Turbo had to be produced to a minimum of 400 copies in 24 months to enter the competition.
Mission accomplished for the 930 turbo, which sold 400 units at the end of 1975 and passed the 1,000 mark in the spring of 1976. This unexpected success led the Zuffenhausen-based company to continue production of the 930 turbo until 1989. A longevity of 14 years that allowed the model to mark the history of the automobile to the point of becoming a true myth.
Described as "sultry" or even "wild" by the press, known for a "kick in the ass" feeling, combined with an understeer bias and a nose that tends to hop and lift at high speeds, the 930 Turbo cultivates a "traitorous" side that requires a bit of delicacy and humility.
In 1978, the 930 Turbo will undergo a realignment bringing its displacement to 3.3 liters, a rebalancing of its crankshaft, to be equipped with air/air exchanger for a better cooling of the turbo, as well as a discharge valve "Wastegate". All of this allows it to increase its power to 300 horsepower, to accelerate from 0 to 100 in 5.2 seconds and to reach 260 km/h.
